Center for Prevention of Eye Disease

Through the generous support of Eye Institute faculty, alumni and friends, the Eye Institute has recently established the Center for Prevention of Eye Disease. At the present time, the Center has identified four initiatives to address public health aspects of eye care and the prevention of eye disease:

  • In cooperation with the Wisconsin Academy of Ophthalmology, a registry has been established for the reporting of eye injuries. This registry will function as an affiliate of the United States Eye Injury Registry (USEIR).
  • The Center will conduct clinical studies to evaluate various screening procedures for glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and pre-school vision screening.
  • Development of a program for detection of genetic eye disease and counseling for parents and potential parents with a family history of inherited ocular disorders has been initiated through the Center.
  • The future directions of the Center for Prevention of Eye Disease will be aimed at major causes of vision loss and expanding the provision of clinical services to areas presently under-served by ophthalmological care.
